Lancaster Symphony Orchestra to Present Extraordinary Duos, An Exploration of Baroque Music & Beyond

LANCASTER, PA - The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), led by Music Director Michael Butterman, continues its 2023-2024 Season with Extraordinary Duos, a program featuring three double concertos along with an exploration of Baroque Music and beyond. Concerts will occur on October 27 & 28 at the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster County Day School.

"This concert shines the spotlight on some of the virtuosos right here in the LSO," Michael Butterman said in a written statement. He continued to describe what audiences can expect from the program, "We'll hear masterpieces by Bach and Vivaldi and explore how later composers refreshed and reimagined those Baroque models. The Bloch Concerto Grosso, while relatively unknown, is a real masterpiece, and I'm sure audiences will love the witty and charming double oboe concerto by Viet Cuong."

With the LSO musicians taking center stage as featured soloists in three double concertos, the concert will give audiences a taste of the early Baroque Era, which often showcased the individual members of the orchestra and their extraordinary talents. Highlighting three families of orchestral instruments (strings, winds, and brass), violinists Luigi Mazzocchi and Dana Allaband will perform JS Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor, trumpeters Luis Engelkeand Guy McIntosh will perform Vivaldi's Concerto for 2 Trumpets in C, and oboists Dana Newcomb and Noelle Drewes will perform Viet Cuong's Extra(ordinarily) Fancy.

This concert of exploration will also feature Maurice Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin—a tribute to the Baroque virtuoso François Couperin, along with Ernest Block's Concerto Grosso No. 1—his reimagining of the standard Baroque format.

Performances will occur on Friday, October 27, at 7:30 PM and Saturday, October 28, at 2:30 PM & 7:30 PM at the LSO's new home, the Gardner Theater within Lancaster Country Day School at 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.
