2023-2024 Season Education Program

The Orchestra Swings

Link Up from Carnegie Hall

“Swing” is many things. It’s a distinctive rhythmic feel; a musical era dominated by big band jazz; a style of dance that grew alongside the music; and that elusive but unmistakable feeling that results when musicians are deeply tuned into each other and playing in sync, or “in the pocket.” Though swing is characteristic of jazz, an orchestra can also swing. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and a culminating interactive performance with an orchestra and jazz ensemble, we will explore the elements that contribute to that magical moment when the orchestra starts to swing.

All About Link Up

Introduce your students to the orchestra by helping them get ready to become a part of it!

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in Link Up – The Orchestra Swings, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, during the 2023-2024 season. Link Up is a hands-on music program for students in grades 3–5 that explores orchestral repertoire in the classroom while preparing students to sing and play recorders or string instruments from home in a culminating live LSO Link Up concert on May 14 & 15, 2024. If you teach recorder, singing, or beginning violin, this program is a must!
