Sound Discovery Programs

Empowering Students & Building Community

Designed to ensure music is accessible to all, our eight award-winning Sound Discovery Programs touch every age group and demographic in Lancaster County.

Help Support Important Programs in Lancaster

Contributions made to our Sound Discover Programs directly support all eight of our education and outreach initiatives.

Carnegie Hall Link Up

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in Link Up – The Orchestra Rocks, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, during the 2020-2021 season. Link Up is a hands-on music program for students in grades 3–5 that explores orchestral repertoire in the classroom while preparing students to sing and play recorders or string instruments from home in a culminating virtual LSO Link Up concert in May 2021.

Gift of Music

The Gift of Music Instrument loan program empowers students throughout Lancaster County to learn to play an instrument. The Gift of Music program collects, restores, and distributes band and orchestra instruments to music programs with students who cannot afford the cost of renting or purchasing an instrument of their own.

Play It Forward

Our Sound Discovery programs have provided musical instruments to Lancaster County students in need for over a decade, but those loaned instruments require reeds, strings, cork grease or valve oil to operate, and that is where the “Play it Forward” program picks up. Music teachers in the School District of Lancaster send their equipment wishlists to the LSO, and, through the generosity of our donors and grants, we purchase and distribute the requested materials.

Instrument Test Drive

Traveling Instrument Test Drives surround the Carnegie Hall Link performances and are presented throughout Lancaster County. These interactive sessions provide an opportunity for the students to “play” instruments they heard at the performances just days before.

StandPartners is the newest addition to the Sound Discovery Programs and pairs LSO musicians with 3rd-grade classrooms for times of sharing performances and discussion. Sessions include in-person visits and side-by-side student ensemble rehearsals with LSO musicians.

LSO Neighborhood Series

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to debut their new LSO Neighborhood Series! Fun, educational, and engaging, these pay-what-you-can performances will follow a briefer format than our Masterworks Series and allow the community to connect more deeply with the music, musicians, and each other. It’s perfect for people of all ages and musical tastes!

Symphony Library Pass

Twelve family passes are in circulation and can be redeemed for any one of the LSO Classic Series concerts, with the potential of providing 288 music lovers annually with a free symphonic concert experience.

Master Classes

Each season, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra partners with a local university to offer Master Classes featuring Lancaster Symphony guest artists. In this informal group setting, college musicians receive coaching and instruction from world-class professional musicians.

Creating a Positive Effect

The symphony has an inventory of nearly 200 instruments available to lend to over 180 students in the School District of Lancaster and surrounding districts.

Instruments must be in good condition and free of mold. Your donation will be evaluated and refurbished before being lent to a student.

Studies have shown that music education has a positive effect on children’s emotional and intellectual growth, improves basic reading and math skills, and strengthens self esteem, self discipline, teamwork, and school attendance. Children involved in a music program are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college and are less likely to be involved in gangs, violence and substance abuse. Invest in our students today by contributing to this project!
